NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -Some 20 million Americans still have no idea whether they're getting Viagra.
But some doctors say that the drug could boost the sex lives of the millions of Americans who took the drug, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, which is sold as a generic drug, is a popular drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is the most commonly used drug in the United States.
"I wouldn't say I've taken Viagra but I would say it's an extremely effective drug," said Dr. Steven H. Simon, a urologist at Mayo Clinic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"It can be very helpful in treating the symptoms of ED and improving sexual performance for many men."
Simon said that while Viagra can be helpful in treating ED, it isn't as effective for treating other conditions.
"Viagra is one of the most effective drugs in the world. It's a very effective drug that can really help men improve their sexual performance. It can help men achieve erections that they are already proud of," said Dr. John J. Dolin, a urologist at the Mayo Clinic.
"It also has a very low risk of causing side effects. The drug can be taken without sexual stimulation, which is a very high risk of causing side effects. In the majority of men who take it, the risk of side effects is lower, so you are very much at a higher risk of side effects."
But some people who took the drug had the side effects of erectile dysfunction. Simon and his team found that those who took Viagra had erectile dysfunction, which is the most common form of erectile dysfunction among men in the U. S. in the past six years. Men who took the drug were also at increased risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure.
In addition, some of the men who took Viagra also had a higher risk of developing high blood pressure.
According to a study published in theJournal of Sexual Medicine, about 2.5 million men and 1.4 million women in the U. were taking Viagra between 2007 and 2008.
"It's definitely something that we're very interested in," Simon said. "There are certainly some benefits to having Viagra but it's definitely an issue that's going to come up in discussions. The more people who use Viagra, the better they think."
In addition to the Viagra, there were other drugs that help men get and keep an erection. But the drug has also been linked to bladder problems.
Dr. David Hirsch, a urologist at the Cleveland Clinic, said that in rare cases, a man who takes Viagra could have a serious bladder problem, which could lead to permanent vision loss.
"If you are taking Viagra and you have an erection that is painful, you could have a very serious problem called a bladder cancer," he said. "If you are taking Viagra and you have a serious problem, you could have a bladder cancer and you could have kidney stones. And you could be at an increased risk of bladder cancer if you are taking Viagra."
Simon and his team also found that some men who had taken Viagra also had a higher risk of bladder cancer.
"So, the risk of bladder cancer is going to be higher, and if you are taking Viagra and you have bladder cancer, you are going to be very vulnerable to getting bladder cancer. It's just one of those things that we want to have on a regular basis," said Simon. "If you are taking Viagra, it can be very dangerous for you."
To make matters worse, the researchers found that men who were taking Viagra were also more likely to have diabetes.
"Diabetes is a disease that affects millions of people worldwide and it can lead to a variety of other problems including heart disease, strokes, kidney problems, kidney failure, liver problems, and many more," Dr. Stephen M. Dolin, a urologist at Mayo Clinic, said.
"It's not only one of the more serious types of kidney problems, but it can also be a very serious medical condition. It's very common in young people. And it affects men of all ages and in most cases, they have diabetes."
Steven E. Johnson, a urologist at Mayo Clinic, said that Viagra's success rate is at about 80 percent.
